Episode Summary

To honour the release of The Ambition Penalty, we’re bringing back this chat with author Stefanie O’Connell, an award-winning writer and journalist covering money, power and ambition in the press and one of our favourite newsletters, Too Ambitious.

Stefanie’s research has never been more important. She uses data to expose how power and gender collide to keep women “in their place,” and shows how liberating women’s ambitions can liberate us all.

In The Ambition Penalty, a phrase she defines as “the sum of the financial, personal, and professional costs women face for daring to want more,” Stefanie challenges the misconception that women lack ambition compared to men. She debunks common claims—like the idea that women aren’t confident enough or don’t speak up enough—used to explain gender disparities in positions of power. Throughout, Stefanie explores why years of progress in education and empowerment have not led to equal advancement for women in the workplace or at home.

According to Stefanie, “By recognizing all of the ways the ambition penalty plays out in women’s working lives, not only can we see how the assumptions behind this blame game are wrong, but we can also start to see what they cost us.”

In this conversation (pre-book), we discuss everything from gig work to 90s girl power to salary negotiation to the #girlboss movement. What better time for a flashback?!
